About Peter

Peter Watson was elected as the Member for Albany in 2001 defeating Kevin Prince, a minister in the Court government. Peter was re-elected in 2005 and 2008.

Starting as a telegram boy for the old Post Master General, Peter worked his way up through the ranks of the PMG and then Australia Post to become a Post Office manager.

After running his own newsagency business in Denmark, Peter returned to Australia Post a few years before his election to Parliament.

A keen middle distance runner and sub four minute miler, Peter represented Australia at the 1968 Olympics and 1974 Commonwealth games

Even after being elected he has dedicated time to coaching and umpiring in junior sports such as athletics and basketball.

Peter has been heavily involved as a patron, committee member and advocate for numerous sporting and community groups, including being an active member of the Albany Hospice Board of management.

In the WA Parliament Peter has served as Acting Speaker and as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Sport & Recreation and the Minister for the Great Southern has also served on numerous committees, including the Standing Committee on Education and Health.

Peter is passionate about helping community groups, especially those that serve the interests of seniors, young people, ex servicemen and women, indigenous people and those suffering mental illness.

Peter has three adult children and three grandchildren.
